Perhaps it was given to us for a special occasion, or we bought it as a souvenir in a small shop while visiting a beautiful city and wanting to discover the local cuisine, or simply while grocery shopping we were drawn to the colorful labels compared to common oil and, driven by curiosity, put it in the cart. Once home, however, we asked ourselves: but how do I use this flavored oil now? In the meantime, while trying to find an answer to this question, we even forgot we had it in the kitchen.

How about we discover the secrets of flavored oil together?

First of all, let’s look at how it is produced and then move on to the different types and how it can be used in the kitchen. You know, flavored oils are somewhat underrated in culinary practice, but they actually have a lot of potential!

What is Flavored Oil and How is it Produced

Flavored oil is a condiment that can be produced with any type of oil: seed oil, peanut oil, extra virgin olive oil… the latter is the preferred choice. It is the best option to choose for both sensory and nutritional aspects. Flavorings or essences are then added to these oils, which can be derived from a fruit, a spice, or an aromatic herb.

Essences are used more by large-scale production companies, while at a more traditional and local level, raw materials are used directly. Specifically, once the spice or aromatic herb is chosen, it is left to infuse in the extra virgin olive oil for several days, until the desired intensity of aroma is reached. As for fruits, those most commonly used to flavor oils are citrus fruits, such as lemon or orange. These fruits are directly milled together with the olives, thus obtaining an intense and fragrant flavored oil already during the production phase.

Regarding labeling, there is no clear and specific regulation; everything is left to the initiative and common sense of private producers. The most commonly used wording to define flavored oils is “Oil-based condiment…”. In the list of ingredients, the flavorings and the type of oil used are then listed.

Types and Common Uses of Flavored Oil

As I mentioned before, flavored oils are somewhat underrated.
