The olive fruit fly<\/a><\/strong> (or Bactrocera oleae) is one of the most dangerous species for the olive tree, as it affects both the plant and the quality of production. The olive fruit fly is mainly found in more humid areas. <\/p>\n\n

Building a trap for the olive fruit fly<\/h2>\n\n

The trap we will look at is a simple device that attracts and captures adult olive fruit flies<\/strong>. To build a trap<\/strong> for the olive fruit fly, we need: <\/p>\n\n

  1. 1.5-2 L PET bottle with cap<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. 750 cc of water<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. 2 tablespoons of brewer’s yeast<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. 1 teaspoon of ammonium sulfate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

    First, take the bottle with the cap and make 4 holes with a diameter of less than 0.5 cm near the neck of the bottle, then add 750 cc of water, 2 tablespoons of brewer’s yeast, and 1 teaspoon of ammonium sulfate.<\/p>\n\n

    How to arrange olive fruit fly traps in the field\"DIY-OLIVE-FRUIT-FLY-TRAPS\"\/Olive fruit fly traps<\/strong> must be positioned in the olive grove by hanging them inside the canopy (so they do not receive direct sunlight) according to the following pattern: one bottle every three trees along the entire perimeter of the plot to attract flies from the inside toward the outside and block those arriving from neighboring fields. It is recommended to increase the density or place a second row on the edge of the olive grove bordering other olive groves, especially if they are abandoned. <\/p>\n\n

    DIY traps<\/strong> also require maintenance, namely: weekly checks and water replenishment; if there are dead flies, their decomposition contributes to the production of odorous substances that attract other flies. There is never a need to clean the trap, but rather to homogenize its contents. We would like to remind you that this type of fly can cause many problems regarding the quality of the new oil<\/a><\/strong> production. Therefore, we recommend paying close attention to this specific issue and building all the necessary traps to avoid problems for the olive trees or the oil<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n
