Olive Oil on Hair: A Natural Remedy That Works

The use of olive oil as a cosmetic seems to have very ancient origins. Already the Romans and Greeks used it for both skin and hair because the oil offers beneficial nutritional properties that help keep hair beautiful, thick, soft, and shiny.

For these very reasons, we want to talk to you about how to use our olive oil to improve the health and appearance of your hair. If, instead, you want to know about other benefits for the body, you can read our dedicated article here.

Olive oil on hair: the properties

Olive oil is rich in:

  • vitamin A, which counteracts aging;
  • vitamin E, which stimulates scalp circulation;
  • fatty acids, which promote hydration.

Precisely because olive oil is so rich, it can be used on all hair types to strengthen, invigorate, and nourish them. Olive oil packs counteract damage caused by atmospheric agents, the heat of hair dryers and straighteners, providing volume and radiance.

We will therefore see how to use olive oil on damaged hair, on dry and frizzy hair, on hair with split ends, but also on oily hair. We will also see how olive oil promotes hair growth and how it can nourish and purify the scalp through an exfoliating mask.

Olive oil for dry and dull hair

If you have dry, dull, and lackluster hair, an olive oil pack and an oil-based conditioner are just what you need. Let’s look at them in detail.

Olive oil hair pack

If you want to restructure your hair to make it soft, shiny, and thick, a periodic olive oil-based pack is just what you need.

This is a treatment to be done before washing your hair. Take a certain amount of oil, depending on the length of your hair, considering that you must apply it warmed between your hands (or slightly in the microwave) starting from the roots to the ends. If you have very long hair, you will need to use one or two extra tablespoons.

Once this is done, simply let your hair rest for at least 30 minutes covered by a warm cloth or, even better, a disposable shower cap. If you can, you can even keep it on for a few hours or overnight, and then wash your head the next day.

This olive oil pack will leave your hair soft, voluminous, and shiny.

Olive oil conditioner for dry hair

If you want to create a conditioner for your dry hair to use before shampooing, you can mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 egg yolks, and a tablespoon of honey. This mixture is rich in nourishing proteins, biotin, vitamin H, and keratin, which help strengthen the hair, making it more resilient.

The mixture of the ingredients mentioned above is easy to prepare: when you have a well-blended mixture of the 3 ingredients, you can apply it to dry hair and leave it on for 30 minutes, covering everything with a shower cap. After this period, the mask should be removed by washing it away with shampoo.

Olive oil on oily hair

If you want to nourish your hair but it tends to be oily, do not worry. You can do it if you take care not to apply the oil to the scalp but only to the lengths. In this way, the oil will restructure the hair, strengthening it and counteracting split ends. Take one or two tablespoons of olive oil and warm it in the microwave. Spread it over the lengths, massaging gently, and then let it rest for a few hours. Afterwards, rinse and wash your hair.

Olive oil for split ends

Split ends are common among those who love having long hair. Unfortunately, hair tends to break and become damaged, which is why it is very important to care for it properly, even with natural methods. Thanks to periodic localized olive oil packs, you will be able to treat existing split ends and prevent new ones from forming. Just a few drops of oil applied to the ends and left to act overnight is enough. The oil will have a restructuring and strengthening power, protecting the weakest part of the hair.

Olive oil and hair growth

Let’s say it right away: olive oil is not a remedy for baldness. Simply, being rich in antioxidants, it could help in counteracting the hormone that causes hair loss.

While for other problems such as a chalazion, olive oil can even prove to be a solution, it cannot be considered a definitive solution for hair, although it helps significantly.

That said, even the most refined oil does not make hair grow back for those who do not have it. If anything, it nourishes the scalp, promoting healthy hair growth. For those who do have hair, the result will be a thick and shiny mane.

Exfoliating scalp scrub

If you wish to purify your scalp, especially if you are in a period of high stress, if you are always in a rush, and if you live in the city, you might consider doing a purifying scrub based on olive oil that deeply cleanses the skin, eliminating dead cells, dirt, and smog.

You can do it a couple of times a month, without overdoing it, thanks to a very gentle mixture: combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 3 of sugar. At this point, mix well to create a uniform mixture. If you have different types of sugar, it is even better. In this way, you can have different sizes of granules that will act differently on the skin.

Alternatively, you can also use baking soda or fine salt. We advise against using coarse salt, which could be too aggressive on the skin.

Once this is done, massage your mixture onto the dampened scalp before shampooing. Massage gently, without scratching, for a few minutes. Afterwards, you can proceed to rinse with lukewarm water and then wash with shampoo.

The result will be remarkable, and you will feel your hair truly clean and tidy.

Olive oil and its benefits for hair

We have seen how to use olive oil to improve hair health. To summarize, if you have oily hair, use the oil only on the lengths to nourish the hair and make it voluminous. To act on dry hair, you can instead do packs or create an oil-based conditioner that will allow you to soften the hair and make it shiny. If, instead, you want to purify the scalp from dirt caused by smog, sweat, and other external agents, you can do an olive oil-based scrub.

In any case, the benefits are visible immediately, and you will realize how much of a difference it makes to periodically use olive oil on your hair.
