WALK AMONG THE OLIVE TREES – ARIANO IRPINO
NATIONAL DAY OF THE WALK AMONG THE OLIVE TREES
“Scattered like flocks, or tenuous as the smoke of a farmhouse” Eugenio Montale
Walking surrounded by the evocative landscape of olive trees, which dress our hillsides in every part of Italy, is the unprecedented and unique experience of the National Day of Walking among the Olive Trees, an initiative promoted by the Oil Cities Association on Sunday, October 28 in 123 cities.
In the 18 regions involved – from Lombardy to Sicily – many itineraries on a single date for a walk (from 2 to 5 kilometers) dedicated to families and enthusiasts to discover Italy’s olive-growing heritage through landscapes linked to the history and culture of green gold. Each municipality has selected a route among olive trees with unique historical and environmental features that ends at an olive mill, olive farm or historic building where participants will be offered a tasting of bread, oil and typical products.
The Camminata tra gli Olivi is an opportunity to re-establish a bond between citizens and their land, a way to introduce people to the landscape of a great civilization thousands of years old, and to let the many enthusiasts of our country’s food and wine culture discover the territories of origin of the product through the olive trees and the men who guard them.
Throughout the peninsula, the rural environment that distinguishes the cultivation of the olive tree has common characteristics but at the same time different depending on the region of belonging, the initiative is therefore also a current way to promote oil tourism by focusing on the indissoluble heritage of our territories, a value that must constitute wealth for future generations, in 2018, declared by Mipaaf, the Year of Italian Food.
